"The Men of the Deeps", a documentary about the world famous coal miners chorus, will to open the Hot Docs International Film Festival in Toronto on April 26th, 2003.

The group will travel to Toronto for the premiere viewing where they will perform a few numbers. Produced by John Walker, "The Men of the Deeps" started filming before the closure of Prince Mine and continued through to last summer. It will air at a later date as a one-hour prime-time CTV special.

The group is scheduled to travel to Ottawa following the Festival to perform with Natalie MacMaster.




In 1873, there were eight coal companies operating in Cape Breton. The miners were paid from 80 cents to $1.50 per day and boys were paid 65 cents.
