While visiting with us, don't miss an underground tour of the Ocean Deeps Colliery, a coal mine located beneath the Museum building. Retired coal miners are your guides for this excursion underground, and promise to entertain and inform you in a custom that has become treasured by visitors all over the world.

Guides Abbie, Donnie, Sheldon, Wishie and Sheldon accompany our guests on this 20-minute expedition into a 1932 'room and pillar' mine. See our lush underground garden and learn all about trapper boys, boys as young as eight and nine whose job it was to open and close the underground doors when the boxes passed, controlling the air current.

See our animated pit pony down in the mine and enjoy your tour!

In 1873, there were eight coal companies operating in Cape Breton. The miners were paid from 80 cents to $1.50 per day and boys were paid 65 cents.
