Press Release... The Board of Directors of the Cape Breton Miners' Museum has lost a long-time friend and fellow board member, Mr. Harvey Webber, who passed away in February 2003. Mr. Webber was one of the Miners' Museum founders and, while Chairman in 1968, developed the Miners' Village. His interest continued as the Museum's Honorary President.

Harvey Webber was president of Smart Shop Place Ltd. of Sydney and Founder of Atlantic Canada Plus. Among his many honours: Sydney Citizen of the Year Award, Honorary Fellow of the Hebrew University, Atlantic Man of the Year, J.A. Hall of Fame, Queen's Counsel of Nova Scotia, Member of the Order of Canada, the Weldon Law Award and Distinguished Retailer of the Year.




In 1873, there were eight coal companies operating in Cape Breton. The miners were paid from 80 cents to $1.50 per day and boys were paid 65 cents.
